Initial review of the Canon 5D Mark II

I never realized I would come to enjoy the full frame capabilities of 5D. My workhorse 1D Mark III has a factor of 1.3x. It was great to be able to have the extra latitude of being close to my subject. The full walk through happened during the just concluded SEMA 2011 event where my assignment was to photograph the various spokesmodels brought in by the various companies that participated. Here is a video compilation of the stills:

It took me a little bit of time to get the hang of focusing via “One Shot”.  I’m so accustomed to “AI Servo” that some of my initial stills were blurry because it focused just a little behind of my subject.  Plus, I had it at AI because I was replicating the settings on the 5d that I had on my 1D.  Lighting may have also played a small part in my initial difficulties in focusing.

I have nothing but praise for the 5D.  It’s easy to figure out why this is the “go to” camera of most independent film makers and up and coming portrait/wedding photographers.  The good still image performance coupled with stellar video make it a versatile tool.
